The Research Group (BSRG) mainly concerned with the group of biopolymers including alginate, chitosan, polylactic acid, polyhydroxyalkonates etc... The use of these biopolymers requires various parameters in biochemical areas and life sciences, such as geometrical shape, modulus, degradation profile etc... The synthesis of polymeric material with the desired criteria is carried out by our group with the use techniques of cross-linking, plasma modifying, freeze drying and controlling the physicochemical parameters.

A biomaterial is defined by Williams in 1987 as “A nonviable material used in a medical device, intended to interact with biological systems.” Biopolymeric Systems Research Group is intended to develop materials that refers to Williams’s definition. Polymeric membranes for wound healing or prevent adhesion for post-surgical operations or degradable scaffold structures for cell proliferation are some of the completed and contiuning research topics.

The living organism – biomaterial surface interactions is the main problem and to prevent these complications with chemically or plasma supported surface modifications of existing biomaterials such as urologic catheters, cardiovascular stents and titanium implants are another main research areas of group to increase biocompatibility.

To obtain a novel or an alternative polymeric matrix materials for the biotechnological applications of enzyme kinetic studies or gene delivery systems are another research topic for the group.

Drug delivery systems and to control the release are the most hot topics of medicine and pharmacology. Therapeutic agents can be caged by polymeric carriers. The research group (BSRG) synthesize polymeric carriers with different parameters from different biodegradable polymers for the desired optimum controlled release of the agent. The carriers can be prepared pH sensitive or used in targeted systems by introducing specific ligands. Carriers can be synthesized in any form, membrane, disk, microsized sphere, nanosized particles, spheres.

The cell culture and cytotoxicity studies on synthesized or chemically and plasma supported modified polymeric biomaterial surfaces is one of the important researches carried out by the BSRG. With the data of studies the biocompatibiltiy of the material and the living organism response to the non-viable materials can be understand.

The research and technology development of biosensors has clearly increased in the last few years due to the necessity of solving current problems in various fields in our society. Biosensors are used for early diagnosis, and they play a crucial role in preventing the progression of diseases. The given research group (BSRG) gains adequate experiences in preparation of Cantilever-based Biosensors, Electrochemical biosensors, and Paper-based biosensors. Cantilever-based biosensors are modified and designed in liquid media for cancer diagnosis. Electrochemical biosensors are used for diagnosis of various biomarkers. Microfluidic paper based analytical devices (µPADs) are applied in the field of point-of-care (POC) diagnostics.
